Prince Edward Island For Bird Watching
Most avid bird watchers have heard of Prince Edward Island in Canada and probably dream of going there if they haven’t already. It really is touted as being an absolute haven for the enthusiastic bird watcher. The island is a national park and in here are countless birds and the great thing is that there are so many species that are present. Add to that the fact that it is a place of such unbelievable beauty and you will see why so many flock there every season.
The setting is simple and rural and most of the folk on the island depend on agriculture for a livelihood.
Bird enthusiasts call it a veritable paradise and it appears so as soon as you get there. The pristine forests, the green hills, the sound of the sea around it and the whole atmosphere together with the chirping of the birds makes one feel that they have escaped to another world.
This island is said to have been the inspiration for the book ‘Anne of the Green Gables’ and somehow time seems to have stood still in this wonderful place. Yes, there has been some land development that has come up in areas surrounding it but the authorities seem to be acting in order to preserve the untouched beauty of this island. The island of course is a tourist haven that attracts more than just bird watchers but for birders, this destination is a lot more than the tourist attractions.
The setting is simple and rural and most of the folk on the island depend on agriculture for a livelihood. The farms are small and old world though some are slowly making their way towards modernized and mechanized options. This is quite unlike the rest of Canada where the agricultural holdings seem to be large and more technologically-run.
Most bird enthusiasts tend to congregate at the coast with its sandstone cliffs, its dunes and its unending beaches. There are harbors, bays and the pace of life seems to be considerably more slowed down than the rest of the world.
What is amazing is how much the island folk look after the place. They feel responsible for the preservation of the island and make the effort to keep it in its original pristine state. Which is why perhaps you will find over 330 kinds of birds. Imagine the treat that is in store for every birdwatcher who comes to visit.
Of course Prince Edward Island is a lot more than bird watching but even if you are not a bird enthusiast, pack a pair of binoculars – you are sure to enjoy watching once you get there. Who knows, you might come back hooked to a new hobby!
