As per the latest studies carried out, there are at least 2000 species of birds in existence in Peru today. Ornithologists or those who are involved in research and study of domestic and wild birds are of the opinion that one can find almost 19% of all species of birds and about 50% neo-tropical birds in Peru. Peru has virgin forests which are the perfect place for rare birds and animals to live.

The National Reserve called Lomas de Lachay is a small reserve and it is the best place to be if bird watching is your hobby. 100 kilometers north of Lima, the capital city of Peru this is a daytime reserve where you can see some of the rare species like the Yellow Finch and the thick billed Miner.

The Marcapomacocha is also a short five hour drive from the capital and here there are rare species like the Sandpipers, the black breasted Hillstar, various types belonging to the Andean species and the amzing Cinclodes with its white belly. In the lake is the Giant coot where you can see beautiful views of the Carpish range, the Lake Junin, and the Huanuco.

The Paracas National Reserve is situated fours hours from Lima. You can see some spectacular birds in this preserve like the Pisco, the Dark Faced Ground Tyrant, the Peruvian thick-knee, the Humboldt Current and the Tawny-throated dotterel.

You also have the Chiclayo-Cajamarca Circuit which is an absolute must if you are a bird watching enthusiast - here you have the chance to see the rare and legendary variety of birds found only in Peru like the long-whiskered owlet, the marañon crescent-chest, the amazing spatule-tail and the Inca finch.

Last but not the least is the Huascarán Biosphere Reserve situated in the central Andes in Huaraz. It’s a ten hour drive through magnificent mountain ranges and lakes. Here one can see the white cheeked Cotinga, the Andean Condors and finches of many types.
